Sunday 3rd September 11am-2pm
Join the herbalist Louise Sam on an exploration of our senses (sight, smell, taste and touch) through an ancient and meditative process of herbal tasting.
'Organoleptic' simply refers to using our senses - sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste to assess and evaluate our surroundings. It is something that we do every day often without much thought. For example. we may dip our toe in the bath to test the temperature of the water or smell our food to check the quality of it or the ingredients used.
We can often take this ability for granted or it can be diminished at times when we are stressed or in ill health. We may eat without really tasting our food, leaving us feeling hungry after a full plate of food. Alternatively, our senses may become overstimulated and have negative effects on our health - constantly looking at phone, television or computer screens. We may be in an environment that is loud and chaotic, leaving us in a state of anxiety. Taking the time to explore our senses can reconnect us with our environment and with ourselves.
During this session, we will also introduce the use of sound as a powerful healing tool. As with our other senses, sound is an essential element to our survival. Hearing and anticipating oncoming danger can be lifesaving. But sound also enables us to interact with our surroundings in other ways – to communicate with other people, to understand and be understood. Sound can also have dramatic effects on our emotional and psychological health – pushing ourselves in the gym when we hear a particular song or bursting into tears when we hear another piece of music. Sound can be a multi-sensory experience and provide us with an incredible tool for introspection and grounding.
